So I've been noticing my Ella (almost 7 at the time) really likes charts at school that keep track of her behavior, daily tasks etc. . .so we decided to implement some of our own. Printed them off, drew in boxes and found some sparkly shiny stickers at Office max, and not just shiny and sparkly ones, but happy face ones because after-all reading scriptures should make us happy!
Last month for Family Home evening we put these together-the kids have already been reading personally in the mornings and at night as a family so they got to color in some books already. Once you have finished a book you get to color it in by name, and for every page you read you get a sticker. For Ella and Betti since they read theirs online via book of mormon/old testament stories videos they read 2 sections before getting a sticker. For every 20 pages you get a temporal reward: example: mcdonalds icecream cone, $5 gift card to Old navy, and one of the kids fav's was staying up an extra 30 minutes at night, which happy to say they all used that one up the other day to play super Mario Bro.s Wii game with mom and dad. To cover the spiritual aspect of things we typed out a list next to our charts that says:
TO BE EFFECTIVE IN OUR STUDY OF THE SCRIPTURES:
* SCHEDULE * SEARCH * PONDER * RELATE * APPLY
"As Lehi searched the plates he learned what all of us learn by studying the scriptures: WHo we are, What we can Become, Prophecies for us and our posterity, The commandments, laws ordinances and covenants we must live by to obtain eternal life, and how we must live in order to endure to the end and return to our Heavenly Father with honor."
At the end of the list it reads: as you read the Book of Mormom you will receive spiritual blessings, and be closer to God. WHen you finish Grandpa James will put a$100 towards college or a mission & you'll get dinner and dessert with mom and dad.
I am so glad we are doing this-the kids are more self motivated, and I know they will gain a greater understanding of their purpose on earth. Here's to 531 happy faces!!
