First Edition: Original Comic Strip Halloween FHE featuring the "James Gang"
It was my turn for Family Home Evening and wanted to do something Halloweenish, but still on the spiritual side. Couldn't think of anything, until coming across a lesson about the Holy Ghost-thought. . ."that would be perfect!" Found lots of articles, and even a cute Tag that had a quote on it about the Holy Ghost and Halloween. http://strongarmor.blogspot.com/2008/09/poem-halloween-holy-ghost.html
Decided to make Ghosts out of Lollipops and tissue paper- (tissue paper is good for SO many things☺) But I had a hard time finding small suckers, (like dum-dums). . . Finally the last place I looked at Walmart in the non-halloween candy section, I found an Airheads brand. The Halloween section had Tootsie pops-but they were too Big and I would have had to buy a lot of bags. . .because we were going to put together little treats to BOO our friends and family.
Kids had a fun time making these-Ethan really liked making scary faces on his with scary eyebrows and mouths, Liz made some vampire teeth ones, Ella made happy ghosts.
FHE:
Song "Listen to the still small voice" from the Childrens Songbook
Scripture-Moroni 10:4 "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. verse:5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."
Discussion on Gift of the Holy Ghost and how it helps, teaches, and protects us, etc. . .
1. Warns us of danger or evil
2. Gives us our testimonies (Alma 5:46).
3. Helps us know and choose the right (D&C 11:12).
4. Helps us understand things (D&C 6:15).
5. Helps us recognize truth (Moroni 10:5).
6. Guides us in important decisions (2 Nephi 32:5).
7. Teaches us (John 14:26).
8. Inspires us (Luke 12:12).
9. Comforts us (Galatians 5:22).
10. Helps us remember things (John 14:26).
11. Helps us understand and communicate with each other (Alma 12:3).
Activity Ideas:
Option A: Inside a room, turn out all the lights. Find a single lamp to turn on and talk about how the light gives off warmth, helps us to see and provides a beacon in the darkness. (Great for young children who understand turning lights off and on)
Option B: Blindfold a member of the family or FHE group. Assign two other people to lead them around the home, outside and so on. One leader acts as the Holy Ghost--giving right directions and the other acts as the adversary--giving wrong directions. Allow the blindfolded person to rely on their own choices on who to follow. Talk about how important it is to listen to the small voice of the Holy Ghost and how easy it is to drown out the righteous help He tries to offer.
***We liked the ideas Above but . . . instead, we decided to get $1.00 glo-sticks, turn off all the lights, and the kids had to find a picture of Christ that daddy hid somewhere in the house. I tried to be really distracting and tell the kids where not to go, and daddy "whispered" where it was. Kids found it-after a few Light Saber attacks. Closed with tying in how the Holy Ghost is a light in our lives, testifies of Christ and can lead us to eternal life if we will listen and be in tune.
Hopped in the car and we were off to a few friends and familys houses-We assumed the get away car position, kids knocked, and ran like the dickens! This was probably my FAVORITE part as well as theirs. Seeing their faces and hearing them giggle ALL the way to the car was Priceless. The glo-sticks gave a cool effect in the pix too. Came home and had Ghost Peeps for a treat. Ella's scary face was saying boo like a ghost, Ethan thought he was pretty scary with his buck teeth, and Liz's face really is scaring me a bit☺Until next time. . .
