This was one of the first places we went to . . . Pu'uhonua o Honaunau was built around 1550 as a sanctuary for defeated warriors, noncombatents in time of war, and those who broke some sacred laws. It felt very peaceful and the white sand and trees made it easy to see that it was a pretty amazing place. We walked near shallow ponds that once held fish for the ali'i (royal chiefs), stones that were used as a game surface with pebbles, the girls are on top of a stone that Mark Twain wrote about saying: it was a favorite resting place of one of the chiefs, we saw an old temple, and a hut that was used to dry ti leaves.
